Designed by architect Timo Penttilä, the Hanasaari B Power Plant began operations in 1974. Over the course of nearly 50 years, the building became a familiar landmark for Helsinki residents. The city-owned energy company Helen ceased operations at the Hanasaari coal-fired power plant in 2023. The guided tours explore the site’s buildings and history.

The design of the power plant building is based on a modular system created by Timo Penttilä. The architect laid a 112 × 195 grid over the power plant site and used it to organize the power generation process designed by engineers, staff facilities, coal conveyors, and auxiliary buildings.
